1. (a) Hint: What is the nullity of $A - I ?$ How is the multiplicity of the eigenvalue related to the dimension of the eigenspace? For symmetric matrices, eigenvalue computations should be quite accurate. Thus one would expect to get nearly full machine accuracy in the computed eigenvalues of A even though $λ = 1$ is a multiple eigenvalue.
2. (b) The roots of a tenth degree polynomial are quite sensitive, i.e., any small roundoff errors in either the data or in the computations are liable to lead to significant errors in the computed roots. In particular if $p (λ)$ has multiple roots, the computed eigenvalues are label to be complex.
13. Hint: Apply the Rank-Nullity theorem.
