Chapter 7. Resourcefulness

Makers are resourceful.

They look for materials and inspiration in unlikely places.

While preparing a presentation for a group of young adults and their mentors, I found myself looking through pictures of one of my mentors, Paul McGill. Paul, an electrical engineer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), designs and builds cutting-edge research tools for underwater exploration and monitoring. Given that my time as an intern at MBARI was spent in the robotics lab and asking Paul for lots of advice, I was quite happy to find a picture of him on a research vessel in Antarctica (Figure 7-1), standing with other engineers and the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that they had designed and built for the expedition. ...
