Working as I have with many manufacturing companies striving to achieve excellence, it has become apparent to me that accountants play a crucial role in any company. Sadly, in most companies, accountants are a part of the problem and rarely a part of the solution. We speak much in the lean manufacturing movement about the elimination of waste in the processes; but the biggest waste I see is the waste of human talent, energy, and creativity throughout Western industry. Accountants are primarily bookkeepers and offer very little more to their companies; this is a tragic waste.
