Preface to the Second Edition
Since it was first published in 1996, Making the Numbers Count has been very successful. When I first wrote the book, I wanted to throw down a gauntlet to the finance and accounting people in Western manufacturing companies. The book is a polemic. It makes the case for a change of role for financial controllers, and it indicates new directions for both management and financial accounting.
In what way has the book been successful? Did it hit the best-sellers list? No. Did the author rake in millions on book royalties? No. Instead, Making the Numbers Count raised the right questions, had an impact on a lot of people, and has been instrumental in helping to create the “lean accounting movement.”
