The observation above was made by Jerry Johnson of VF Corporation at a World-Class Management Accounting Conference in Arlington, Virginia. VF Corporation is one of the worlds largest manufacturers of fashion apparel, and Mr. Johnson was, until his recent retirement, the vice president of finance and the chief financial officer. Mr. Johnsons presentation was entitled “Accounting Is Boring but Controllership Is Not,” and it struck a chord with many of the accountants at the conference because Jerry presented some of the frustrations shared by all of us. And although he made these comments a long time ago—the conference was held in May 1991—they still ring true today.
