The British Standard BS 8888 recommends that for normal practical purposes the area of the largest sheet is 1 m2 and the sides are in the ratio of 1:√2. The dimensions of the sheet are 841 mm × 1189 mm. For smaller sheets the longest side is progressively halved and the designations and dimensions are given in Table 5.1 and Fig. 5.1. Since the A0 size has the area of 1 m2, paper weights are conveniently expressed in the unit ‘grams per square metre’.
