The history of the S&P 500 Index (SPX) dates all the way back to 1923, where it was then known as the Composite Index. Initially, it tracked a small number of stocks. In 1957, the number of tracked stocks expanded to 500, and became the SPX.
Stocks that make up the SPX are publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (NASDAQ). The index is considered as a leading representation of the United States economy through large cap common stocks. Recalculation of the index takes place every 15 seconds and is distributed by Reuters America Holdings, Inc.
The common ticker symbols used by exchanges are SPX and INX, and on some websites is ^GSPC.
