It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Understanding the importance of spiking
Before we embark on building this all-singing, all-dancing shallow renderer helper library, I want to get across the importance of spiking and how I came up with the approach you're about to follow.
It would be wrong to think that I sat down and planned out this code in a linear progression from A to B, just as shown in this books. That is absolutely not what I did. When I started, I first had to explore with a lot of trial and error. Of course, all programmers should know how to explore a codebase, but in the TDD process, it's given a special significance.
The process for me looked a little like this:
- Write a test that looked kind of how I wanted it to look, by making a guess
