はじめに
ライトニングネットワークは、ビットコインの支払いを「オフチェーン」で実行できるようにするセカンドレイヤーのピアツーピアネットワークです。つまり、それらの支払いはトランザクションとしてビットコインブロックチェーンにコミットされません。
ライトニングネットワークにより、少額の支払いであっても、ビットコインの支払いが安全で、安価で、高速で、はるかにプライベートなものになります。
ペイメントチャネルというアイデアを最初に提案したのは、ビットコインを発明したサトシ・ナカモトです。この発想に基づくライトニングネットワークはペイメントチャネルからなるルーティングネットワークであり、支払いは支払人から受取人までのパスに沿って各ペイメントチャネルを「ホップ」していきます。
ライトニングネットワークが最初に提案されたのは、Joseph PoonとThaddeus Dryjaが2015年に発表した画期的な論文「The Bitcoin Lightning Network: Scalable Off-Chain Instant Payments」でのことでした。2017年には、ライトニングネットワークをインターネット上で実行する「テスト」が行われ、さまざまなグループが互換性のある実装を構築し、相互運用性規格の策定に協力しました。2018年には、ライトニングネットワークが「実用化」され、支払いが流れ始めました。
2019年、Andreas M. Antonopoulos、Olaoluwa Osuntokun、René Pickhardtが本書を共同執筆する運びとなりました。どうやらとてもうまくいったようです！
