Abstract

This chapter uses a range of substances to evaluate the current practices when negotiating elimination of harmful substances. The core question is whether the current procedures can be seen as better than the way humanity dealt with the slow elimination of lead and asbestos. Using the examples of formaldehyde and phthalate plasticizers in polyvinyl chloride, the chapter reviews patterns with substances which have recently received some regulative action against them.
