We understand by now that a certain amount of failure is inevitable. In a sufficiently complex system, some amount of failure will occur some of the time. By using the techniques in this chapter, we can try and reduce the likelihood that one of these failures will impact customers. Regardless of how much we try to prevent it from happening, some kind of failure will probably impact the customer experience at some point in your applications lifespan. Users, however, can be surprisingly compassionate in the face of system outages, provided the user experience degrades gracefully.
