Sizing Guidelines

As you have read through this chapter you have probably noticed the emphasis on performing testing and sizing exercises in your own environment. Not every individual configuration has a concise and clear answer. As the number of processor cores increase, memory densities rise, and storage costs change, so do the specifics of a configuration. But don't worry, plenty of guidelines will do just that—guide you to a configuration that meets your needs.

The basic supported hardware requirements for installing Exchange server are:

  • An x64-based processor

  • Minimum of 4 GB of RAM

  • Page file equal to the physical memory plus 10 MB

  • Minimum of 1.2 GB of NTFS formatted disk space:

    • Additional 500 MB for each Unified Messaging language pack
