Out-of-band release terminology

Use one of the following terms to refer to software that is released outside the regular product release cycle:

To refer to bug fixes that are security-related: security update
To refer to bug fixes that are not security-related: update, critical update, definition update
To refer to cumulative sets of updates: update rollup, hotfix, service pack
To refer to product functionality updates: feature pack
To refer generically to out-of-band releases: software update

Do not use bug fix, patch, software patch, or QFE to describe an out-of-band release.
