Understanding EFS

Chapter 4, “Securing Access with Permissions,” introduced NTFS. NTFS provides security such as assigning permissions to files and folders to restrict access. Another feature of NTFS is Encrypting File System (EFS). On an NTFS volume, you can use EFS to encrypt NTFS files and folders. When a file is encrypted with EFS, only specific users can access it.

You can encrypt folders and files with EFS using the following steps:

Microsoft recommends that you encrypt folders instead of individual files. All files within the folder are automatically encrypted.

1. Launch Windows Explorer, and browse to the folder.

2. Right-click the folder, and select Properties.

3. With the General tab selected, click the Advanced button.
