Chapter 9. MmWave Standardization
9.1 Introduction
The mmWave wireless field is nascent and will rely upon an international standard setting process to ensure that a global mass market, with worldwide interoperability, will exist for consumers throughout the world. Standards activities for mmWave 5G cellular systems have not yet begun, but they are anticipated to begin in 2015–2016. Since the early 2000s, however, there have been standardization efforts for unlicensed 60 GHz products for personal area and local area networks. These products will soon become pervasive throughout the world [AH91][CF94]. Spectrum at 60 GHz became internationally available in the 1990s, well ahead of the commercial viability of mass market mmWave products.
