A conventional fax machine detects its own condition and displays information about its problems as well as considerable additional data about its operating condition on the LED display on its control panel. A multifunction peripheral provides essentially the same kind of information on its control panel. Although the MFP gives great flexibility to the personal computer to control its functions, the basic design of an MFP that faxes, scans, and prints is very much like that of a fax machine. Machines that do not provide the fax function are more like digital copiers. They are classed as MFPs because they have more than one function, i.e., scanning and printing.
