私はネットワークエンジニアとして仕事を始めてちょうど10年になります。
2015年頃にNANOG（North America Network Operators' Group）という北米のカンファレンスで、ネットワーク自動化に関する講演を初めて聞いたときに全身に衝撃が走りました。それまでネットワークエンジニアとして当たり前だと信じていた「過去のネットワーク運用の伝統や方針を守ることで、ネットワークインフラの安全を守る」という自身の古い考え方が崩れ落ち、そのかわりに「ネットワークの運用スタイルは自らの手で変えていくことができる」という希望に満ちた興奮を感じたことを今でも覚えています。
その後私はネットワーク自動化を追い求めて、一度はシリコンバレーに生活拠点を移し、さまざまな企業のネットワーク自動化の事例を追うようになりました。そのような立場になって言えるのは、ネットワーク自動化を実践しているエンジニアの多くは、苦労しながらも地道に勉強することでスキルを獲得し、試行錯誤しながら少しずつネットワーク自動化を進めているということです。そして、勉強することもなしに最初からいとも簡単にネットワーク自動化を実現できるようなエンジニアはほとんど存在しないということも重要です。誰もが苦労して学び、試行錯誤し、ときには失敗の中からも学び、一進一退しながらその境地にたどり着いているのが実態です。
