Applying for IRS tax exemption
If you want to provide programs and services as a nonprofit organization, you must set up the legal structure for your organization and apply for its tax exemption. This process usually consists of forming a nonprofit corporation under the laws of your state and then submitting an online application to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), requesting that your organization be recognized as tax-exempt. You must take care of these tasks, which require attention to detail and ample planning, before you can begin to fulfill your mission.
