In its manuals, Oracle divides character functions into two classes—those that return character values and those that return numeric values. The SUBSTR function, which returns a substring of a larger string, is an example of the former. The LENGTH function, which returns the length of a string, is an example of the latter. This book combines the two types into one section for ease of reference.
