Summary
1. There are two necessary oppositional forces at play in all
dilemmas: crusading and tradition bearing.
Crusading: This force comes from the awareness of the
downsides of the present pole (the one the organization is
currently emphasizing) and the upsides of the opposite pole.
Those crusading want to make things better. For them, this is
done by shifting to the upside of the opposite pole.
Strengths:
• Will not ignore the downsides of the present pole. Lis-
tening to their concerns can help the system self-correct
in a timely fashion.
• Show respect for what “could be.” Provide vision and
energy for moving to the other pole.
