After you design something, you will need to build a prototype of it. Prototyping is the process of creating a real physical version of your circuit or device so that you can see if it works. It is the critical part of the design process. There are also instances when you will discover a circuit you like and may be able to use. Your first step of the design would be to build the circuit and evaluate it based upon your needs. Then you can modify it to fit your specifications. In any case, you must build a prototype. It is the only real way to validate its operation. Some common prototyping techniques are described in this chapter.
