Starting with the Business Process

Before jumping into code, we need to understand the business process we’re trying to capture in our system. Our goal is to answer questions like:

  • What does our system do?
  • What domain behavior are we trying to capture?
  • What actions can users take?
  • If our system were implemented with paper or spreadsheets, what discrete steps emerge?

We need to register users, and when they try to register, we’ll tell them if they succeeded or not. Maybe they sent us an invalid email address; maybe they’re trying to register with an email address that has already been used; or maybe something else. And of course, if they succeeded, we need to record that too. We’ll also send them a welcome email, although we won’t implement sending ...
