As a quick recap of the discussion on “Large Application Systems,” in Chapter 2, you may recall that, over a period of several decades, as business organizations grew, software applications and their IT infrastructure grew as well. The IT environment was transformed from a large, monolithic, slow-processing, low-memory system with a limited number of user systems to a super fast, gigabyte-memory system with a large number of user systems. The software applications that were working on systems in the old, dinosaurian era had to be transformed gradually to work on the now prevalent jet age infrastructure.
