It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
4 – XML External Entities
Old applications that still use XML/SOAP web services are the ones that are the most susceptible to this kind of attack. In fact, any application (or backend) that uses XML to execute its functions will be a victim of this kind of flaw; this attack can lead to DOS (denial of service). So, here's the list that you should keep in mind when handling XML items:
- Is the application using a SOAP version older than 1.2?
- Does the application use SAML within a federated or single sign-on (SSO) environment?
- Does the application support any XML file upload?
- Does the application execute any of the items in the XML that can be manipulated?
