Abstract

The field of integrated optics is dedicated to the research, development, and application of optical devices and systems, leveraging integrated circuit technology for their creation and implementation. This domain facilitates the amalgamation of various optical elements including waveguides, couplers, modulators, detectors, and lasers onto a singular substrate. A significant benefit of this approach is its ability to work in tandem with electronic integrated circuits, thereby enabling the combined operation of optical and electronic features on a singular chip. This integration is essential for the effective exchange of data between optical and electronic sectors, playing a pivotal role in applications such as optical interconnects within high-speed communication networks, optical sensing systems, and optoelectronic integrated circuits. This exposition offers a succinct review of the predominant and commercially viable optical platforms alongside the fabrication methodologies employed in the engineering of photonic integrated circuits, underscoring the field’s contribution to technological progress and application diversity.
