Recording Strings
Once the main microphones have been placed for an optimal overall balance of the orchestra in the room, the next step is optimizing the string sound and balancing the strings to the rest of the orchestra (winds, brass, percussion). The placement and adjustment of a widely spaced pair of microphones commonly referred to as “outriggers” will be discussed, and the best use of “spot” or support microphones for each string section will be addressed.
Other sections of the orchestra can be supported in level and brought into focus using close or “spot” microphones, but the strings are not so easily accommodated. They are the closest section to the main microphones, which is a great advantage, but that alone isn’t always enough. Other ...
