Preface
I once presented a lecture titled “How to make a recording in three easy steps”. I began the talk by laying out the three “steps” in the opening minute of the lecture, and after that I said, “Well that just about wraps it up—thanks for coming”. Of course there is more to it than that (and there was much more to my lecture) and none of the steps is necessarily “easy”, although I would say that a career in recording classical music can be interesting and rewarding. When asked what a recording engineer actually does, it would be misleading to simply answer that “they basically listen to music all day”, as it is not always a continually enjoyable experience. At least for those who truly love music, the most frustrating and painful moments ...
