So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

新規のコードを書くこと、そして良いコード、つまり保守可能なコードとはどういうものかについて触れてきた。オブジェクト指向プログラミングとエクストリームプログラミング由来の確かな原則とプラクティスによって、開発者ははるかに保守や拡張のコストが低いコードを書けるようになる。保守可能なソフトウェア開発のプラクティスがもっと採用されれば、ソフトウェアの保守コストは下がる。そしてユーザーは、自分たちのソフトウェアが存在する限り価値を得ることが可能になる。未来は明るいのだ。しかし現在はどうだろう？

私は手に負えない進行中の問題に対応し続けている。その事実がありながら、本書では新規のコードを書くことに主眼を置いている。それは私たち全員が、良いコードとはどのようなものか理解しておきたいからだ。ソフトウェアを保守可能なものにするために、どういったものを探し求めるべきなのか、理解しておきたいのだ。より良いものがどんなものか知らなければ、レガシーコードをリファクタリングしてもより良いものにしようがないのだ。
ここにたどり着く方法についても目を向けた。開発者であれば本来は触れるのも恐ろしいレガシーコードの山頂に座ることだ。
