In conclusion
In the Introduction to this book I described the experience of stumbling out into the night after a long meeting trying to save a retailer that had not embraced change quickly enough – an experience sadly shared by many other leadership teams in recent years.
Under that pressure, there is a natural tendency to look for causes outside our own businesses. Indeed, the New Normal presents challenges for society and government as well as for business leaders. Inflexible property contracts; the business rates paid by retailers but not really paid by internet start-ups; the clever tax ‘minimising’ that an international business without stores can get up to. All of these are topics worth time and discussion if we are to rebuild retailing. ...
