Arithmetic Units
The execution unit is the functional component in the processor responsible for performing instruction operations. The execution unit supports a wide variety of functions with high complexity and often constitutes the critical path in terms of timing, as well as occupying significant resources. Therefore, the execution unit is crucial in processor design. Under specific process technologies, there are often multiple different hardware algorithm options available to achieve the required computational functions. During the design process, it is necessary to balance and trade off between different metrics such as performance, power consumption, and area to select the most suitable hardware implementation scheme.
