Lettering and proper sign painting is an art in itself. Many extremely skilled painters are lettering specialists. The craft relies on tools similar to those of the scenic artist, but the investment in good lettering brushes can be considerable. A theatrical scenic artist will be called on to do signage often and should therefore know some basic rules of the craft. Because reprographic services are readily available, there is a temptation to ignore this skill set.
