Methods are functions that belong to a specific type, and are called using the dot notation, for example:

myObject.myMethod() 

The dot notation is widely used in C++ and other object-oriented languages. The dot notation and the class system stemmed from a common pattern that was used in C. The common pattern is to define a set of functions that all operate on a specific data type. All of the related functions have the same first parameter, which is the data to be operated on. Since this is such a common pattern, Go built it into the language.
