PostgreSQL is known for its rich feature set, and its high compliance with the ANSI SQL standard. PostgreSQL runs on many operating systems and hardware platforms and is free for personal use; you can download it from www.postgresql.org.
This book covers PostgreSQL 7.1. To determine which version of PostgreSQL you are running, type psql -V at a command prompt and press Enter.
You can use the psql command-line utility to run SQL programs.
