Foreword

When I go back in time to when I bought my very first technical book (about Perl 4 programming), I had no idea what it would mean to me. Of course, I had expected to learn about Perl, but indirectly the book opened a whole new world to me. The book introduced me to Unix and taught me valuable things about operating systems in general. It taught me about filesystems and networking, about Perl modules and Perl developers, and about open source and communities.
