39. PAINTING WITH LIGHT

LIGHT PAINTING is a technique whereby you use an external light source to selectively expose part of a scene with the camera shutter open. It’s very simple to start painting with light, but to get good at it, it takes practice, patience, and the ability to imagine the outcome before the lights are turned off.

To paint with light, you will need a camera, lens, tripod, dark room, light, and an interesting subject. Then just follow these steps:

  • Mount the camera on the tripod.
  • Focus the camera on the subject.
  • Turn the autofocus off so that the camera doesn’t try to refocus when you press the shutter release button.
