Chapter 5: Hit discovery
Hannes Whittingham; Stephanie Kay Ashenden Data Sciences and Quantitative Biology, Discovery Sciences, R&D, AstraZeneca, Cambridge, United Kingdom
Abstract
Hit discovery is concerned with the identification of a compound that “hits” or interacts with a target in a biological sense. However, the use of this term varies between researchers, and it can also be described as a compound showing desired activity in a screen, which is confirmed in retesting. In this phase of the drug discovery process, screening assays are developed, and tools and methods to identify new compounds, such as high-throughput screening, play an important role.
