Virtual classrooms have been around for more than 20 years, and they are here to stay. Use of virtual classrooms for formal training slowly grew from 5 percent in 2000, to 10 percent in 2005, and to 14 percent in 2019 (ATD 2020a). In 2020, that number skyrocketed due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, with many organizations quickly switching much of their training from in-person to online. ATD reported that 98 percent of the organizations surveyed in 2021 used virtual classrooms, and nine in 10 of those organizations cited the pandemic as a major driver (ATD 2021).
