Resistors come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from near-microscopic surface-mount chips to heating elements in electric stoves. The experiments in this book use standard carbon-film 1/4-watt resistors with tolerances of ±5 or ±10 percent. These cylindrical resistors measure about six or seven millimeters in length and two millimeters in diameter and electrical leads extend from each end.
Resistor manufacturers have adopted a standard that uses narrow colored bands to “encode” a resistance value. The colors indicate two digits followed by a multiplier. If you see a resistor marked with yellow-violet-red-gold bands, you can use a color-code chart to determine its value. ...
