Rajiv had just come from a one-on-one meeting with his boss, where he learned he’d been promoted to EVP of operations. The plan was to merge two functional areas of the organization, which would substantially increase the number of Rajiv’s direct reports, including a group whose responsibilities weren’t in his current realm of expertise.
