Chapter 9. Make a Good First Impression

WE'VE ALL HEARD THE EXPRESSION: "You don't get a second chance to make a good first impression." Given the time constraints and physical separation between you and your participants, making them feel welcome and oriented from the start of your session will ward off a potential feeling of isolation and make students more open to their learning experience. In this chapter we describe four features of good introductions and how to implement them. Good introductions are:

  • Interactive to establish social presence and engage participants

  • Informative to set expectations and orient participants

  • Visual to engage participants

  • Efficient to use limited time effectively
