The world is filled with objects that range naturally from white to black and every shade of gray in between. You can use those natural brightness values to contrast with each other, but you have to look for them. It can be easy to see a white subject also capture a light area in the background that reduces the tonal contrast when nearby there is a dark area that would contrast nicely. It just takes being aware of this and moving until you get the right angle to give you contrast.
