After the Camera

IT WOULD BE EASY TO THINK THAT ALL OF THIS TALK about putting the soul back into our craft and our art ends the moment we press the shutter, as if our role ends the moment the exposure is made. But being aware of our humanity’s role isn’t just a better means to a technical end, nor is the photograph finished the moment the shutter closes.

It’s not our humanity that serves the craft; it’s the other way around. Our craft serves our humanity. That our humanity (the willingness to engage our craft with the fullness of who we are and can be) makes our photography better is only a pragmatic benefit.
