Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors, by Michael E. Porter. 1980; reprint, New York: Free Press, 1998.
This is Porter’s classic work on industry analysis. It identifies five economic forces that influence industry profitability and have a great impact on industry-level profit. He talks about how to analyze these forces in your industry and how to position your firm vis-à-vis their impact.
