About the Cover Illustration

The image on the cover of The Tao of Microservices is a reproduction of a seventeenth-century woodblock print depicting Emperor Reigen of Japan, whose reign spanned 23 years, from 1663 through 1687. He was the 112th emperor of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession of the Chrysanthemum Throne. The role of the emperor of Japan has historically alternated between a largely ceremonial one and that of an actual imperial ruler. Since the establishment of the first shogunate in 1192, the Emperors of Japan have rarely taken on the role of supreme battlefield commander, unlike many Western monarchs.
