The first law of thermodynamics helps in finding out change in energy of a system for a given amount of heat and work exchange in a process. However, it fails to answer questions like why heat flows from high temperature to low temperature, why work cannot be produced by a system undergoing a cycle change if it exchanges heat with a single thermal reservoir, why an apple falls to the ground after leaving the branch of a tree, or why water flows from high altitude to low altitude and so on.
