22Good Choices
The kids all got home from their sports and after-school activities, and dinner started promptly at 7:30 p.m. They had a rule for the table. No cell phones. Even him. Whatever it was, and whoever it was, would be able to wait half an hour.
Amazing how the world changed so quickly once everyone had a super computer in their pocket. The ability to talk to the world anytime, anywhere. Instant gratification.
“I want to thank you all for making time to be here. As you know, I was up for a promotion today.”
The kids continued to eat.
“And, I’m happy to report that as a team, we’re still undefeated. I got the job.”
The kids cheered just loud enough to frighten the dog, who started barking.
“Was it close?” Drew asked. “Like, if it was a race, how much did you win by?”
Brian thought for a moment. He could say it wasn’t close, but that wouldn’t be entirely true. This was actually a chance for a teachable moment.
“If it was a race,” Brian answered, “I would have won on a false start.”
“What do you mean?” Sara asked.
Brian explained to everyone that the board of directors had brought him into the conference room to let him know their decision to make him the CEO. After all the congratulations, they sat him down and talked about why he was chosen. But they also explained that his lack of experience was a concern for some of the members.
