Quelle est la bonne façon de faire quand on veut changer un système existant ? C'est ce qu'on va voir dans ce chapitre.
D'un point de vue général, il y a deux options : soit on remplace complètement le système existant, soit on le garde en le remodelant ou en le refactorisant « simplement ». Pour le remplacement, il y a aussi deux variantes : le remplacement radical et le remplacement progressif.
À un niveau plus détaillé, différentes approches peuvent être utilisées pour différents sous-systèmes d'un système.
Pour l'instant, on va rester à un niveau général ; les options sont les suivantes :

Le nouveau système est construit à partir de zéro sur un site vierge, tandis que l'ancien système continue de fonctionner. À un moment donné, le passage de l'ancien système au nouveau système est effectué.
- Étape par étape

Le nouveau système est développé pièce par pièce et chaque pièce est mise en production dès que possible. En même temps, la fonctionnalité correspondante dans l'ancien système est désactivée.
