Le chapitre précédent traitait de la manière d'r l'architecture cible. Ce chapitre explique comment aligner l'architecture réelle sur cette architecture cible. Il explique également comment définir et rassembler les étapes à suivre pour passer de l'architecture réelle à l'architecture cible.
Vu la longueur de ce chapitre par rapport aux précédents, on comprend que l'étape 3 demande plus d'efforts que les étapes 1 et 2. Le chapitre suivant est encore plus long, car l'étape 4 demande encore plus d'efforts.
Si on a utilisé la carte du contexte cible de l'étape 2 pour déterminer les contextes délimités qu'on veut mettre en œuvre dans notre logiciel, l'étape suivante consiste à déterminer notre point de départ. La question suivante est donc : « Où en sommes-nous réellement ? » Une fois qu'on a trouvé la réponse à cette question et qu'on sait où on en est (étape 3) et où on veut aller (carte contextuelle cible de l'étape 2), on peut déduire la direction à prendre pour passer de la situation actuelle à la situation cible.
