This chapter describes a methodology for managing the Voice over IP (VoIP) network through a key performance metrics-based approach. It builds on the overview given in Chapter 1, “Voice over IP (VoIP) and Network Management,” and describes how this metrics-based methodology can be used to go beyond the day-to-day network element management of a Fault Configuration Accounting Performance Security (FCAPS) model. The methodology helps isolate key trends in the network for proactive and preemptive network management. We use the terms key metrics and key performance indicators (KPI) interchangeably throughout the book.
