It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Translates a username to a specific directory and default filename.
The default is the user’s home directory in the subdirectory
public_html, loading the file index.html. Alternatively,
you can specify the enabled or disabled keyword
followed by a series of usernames you wish to enable or disable
access. For example:
UserDir enabled robert stephen UserDir disabled john linda
(Apache 1.3 or later)
